Learn the scales and practice them til you can go up and down without stopping and staying in tempo ...

For example, take G major ... Play all the scales and chords within it (G, Am, Bm, C, D, Em, F#) ...

So play a G, then the G scale, then Am, and the Am scale, etc ... keep a steady tempo the whole time.

Then start calling out the scale you're going to go to and play the scale ... so if I'm strumming Am and I say, I'm going to go to Em using the Bm scale (because Em and Bm share a note) ... and then play it ... keeping the same tempo from when you first started. Play all the scales and chords.

Finally, riff off the scales and sing the notes as you play ... make sure that you play all the scales and chords at some point.

If you go through the whole thing it should take you about 4 mins from start to finish. It's a good practice technique.

Thanks for the cd with the new DMB songs - appreciate it.

Paul is making some copies of some of my stuff from my lessons. I'll have him make a copy for you as well. Should be some helpful stuff on scales for you.

Cheers

P.S. Let me know if Paul can run any errands for you in the city while he is interning for me.

i've just been recently getting the hang of scales and soloing and been practicing it quite a bit by using this site:

http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/g ... ex_rb.html

however, this shows you the scales up to the 12th fret, but how can i know the notes past the 12th fret? is it the pattern starting from the 1st fret? any help would be appreciated

The 12th fret = same note as open string, one octave up

13th fret = same as 1st fret

and so on

Indeed..everything from the 12th fret on is the same as 1-11, an octave up.

if you didnt know the 6th string is actually the E string the one closest to your face the thickest one however you wanna describe it
