Here is a way I figured out to make "windows sound recorder" record for more than 1 minute:

1. Open up "windows sound recorder"
2. Record something, anything, for a short while.
3. Stop the recording.
4. Rewind the recording to the beginning.
5. Now, use the following drop down menu:
Effects>Decrease Speed (you will notice that each time you click on "Decrease Speed" the length of the recording increases....just do it as many times as you need to get the length you require).
6. Now, just record over the original and wala, your'e done!

Hope this helps.

Cool Edit won't sound any better than Sound Recorder. It just depends on what you are recording with.

I beg to differ, I recorded stuff on the sound recorder and it was hissy and terrible, same day someone told me about cool edit pro, I downloaded it and it sounded great. Thats my experience, maybe yours was different or maybe it happened for differenet reasons. But I would think a free, ghetto windows program and a $150+ program would sound different.

for FREE NON PIRATED recording, I know of at least two people (Blue Waters and myself) who use a program called mtstudio. just google it. you get all the effects that you could want (echo, reverb, compressor, eq, and many others) and recording of up to three tracks. then get the FREE mkw audio compression tool to turn those wav files into mp3. I record in my computer mic, and while suboptimal, is a huge help as far as getting some recordings down and posting to get feedback. my total setup cost me $9.00. fear me. I think that until you are ready to lay down tracks fo a demo or something, a computer mic is fine. get CEP if you're ok with pirating, mtstudio if youre not or you dont have kazaa or it's too much a pain in the ass.
Fear my recording setup:

jsgksu wrote:Wayward_Blue, I feel sorry for you if you spent $150 on cool edit. As for the original question, you can just use a free (pirated) version of cool edit and a regular computer mic that a comp comes with. I record my stuff like that, it cost me nothing and it sounds fine unless youre going for serious pro recording
no, My friend gave me Cool Edit but I was just giving him suggestions incase he doesn't want to go the pirated route (some people are honest when it comes to stuff like that but not me  ) but as for the computer mic it works but not that well.

If I want to run a condenser mic into my soundcard, what do I do? I've got one coming and want to know what I need to have before I can start.

get a mic cable with XLR (insert into the mic) on one end and 1/4" TRS on one end and then get an adaptor for the 1/4" TRS to make it 1/8" and that should allow it to plug right into your soundcard

my sound card takes the 1/8" input I don't need to use the USB. the 1/8" is the standard size input for a computer mic (the actual crappy ones made for computers) so it should work for all. But maybe I'm wrong it works for me though

depends if it need phantom power

if it does you will need to buy a mixer with it then hook that up to the soundcard

the mixer makes it easy cause you can hook more than one thing up to the computer then
