"Cheating" Dave Songs

Does anyone else feel like there's got to be some sort of a catch when an easy Dave song comes along? I just saw the tabs for Big Eyed Fish and played it perfectly on my first try, and I am still convinced there is something big I am missing that would make it better. Also, does anyone else think it's ok to not play his songs just like him? I mean, don't get me wrong, of course it is ok! But I mean, on Lie in Our Graves for instance, I play the jam as D A Bm G A, instead of the way listed here. Is there any distinct advantage or disadvantage to doing it either way? I just can't mute like him. Thanks a ton.

honestly, playing it differently is just putting your own touch into the song-it can be a good thing, i do that sometimes. but if you cant mute like dave, then you're missing the point of learning his songs-the technique. id go with whatever is harder to play for you, to develop your guitar playing.

I completely agree, I should play what's harder to get better. However, sometimes I admit I just don't see why playing his way makes a song sound better. For instance, in Tripping Billies I used the D, A, G, and Bm chords, and can play it just as fast. IMO, it sounds just as good as his sliding two string muting version. Does playing it his way really make it better? I don't know, but I know there are some songs where it does. However, some songs can be played a more "conventional" way and sound good. I just hate muting:)

gravedigger is 100 percent correct i think,
i love muting, its the strength of my playing along with my rhythm, if i didnt have that ability i wouldnt be near as good, if you can mix up your riffs with some funky muting, you can get some crazy shit going,

you will get it eventually, and understand the wide world of muting and how good it can sound, and how fun it is
