I have singing issues

Unread post by QuattroDore » Thu Mar 27, 2003 3:15 am

Does anyone else have the total inability to play and sing, coffeeshop solo style? Can't do it. And I'm not talking The Stone, or some really complex jazz phrasing. I'm talking Walk Away by Ben Harper type of simplicity. My rhythm just gets all dicked up whenever I open my mouth. I don't know if its an internal rhythm thing, as in: lack thereof, simply because (and I hate to toot my own horn), I can dance like a motherfucker.

Any suggestions from the talented?

yeah, i know what you mean. i think im a decent singer but when i first tried the two together it was a disaster. ive gotten better but i naturally fumble w/ alot of really easy stuff sometimes and its mega embarassing (only to myself though-im too much of a pansy to share my magic w/ the world  ). some of that simple stuff leaves too much room to mess up. the harder stuff sometimes has a pretty good groove singing/voice wise. it sucks to say this but i guess it all comes w/ time/practice.
sucks. i would very much like it all NOW. im tired though so im rambling to keep from writing a paper. keep pickin.

I'm a newbie too... I finally am at a point where I feel I can play the main part of Crash ok... However, I too tried to open my mouth, and let me tell you. I won't be doing that for a while again. Not only did I sound like crap, but I also screwed up the playing part quite a bit... Oh well. I guess I just need practice and a new voice

i have the exact same problem, and it's really frustrating, but i wouldn't worry about it being a 'lack of internal rhythm' or anything, because i have been singing all my life and i have some rhythm at least....i think it's more of a "walking and chewing gum" complex...i hope it wears off...

Yup, got the exact same thing. The only song that I can sing and play at the same time is comfortable, jm.

Practice, Practice and Plenty of more practice will allow you to Sing, Fart, Dance, Watch TV while you play guitar. When I first started playing, If someone asked me a question while I was playing, I would fuck up. Just get your muscle -memory down in your fingers So that playing is automatic. Then you can do what you please.

Keep on playing the guitar part over and over until you can play it without thinking, and then try humming it a little, then move to the words, thats what i did.

I was the same way, some one would ask me something and I would have to stop to even think of answering their question. I cant all out sing and play at the same time yet but Im geting closer everyday. As much as I hated hearing it when I couldnt do it at all the key really is practice.

i keep hearing this "learn the song till you can play it without thinking"...

but does that get easier too? like....if it takes me say, a month to learn a song that well (it's taking a damn long time), does that mean the next one will take that long too?

or does it get easier?

I can dance and watch TV while I play guitar, but everytime I try to fart, my fingers just stop....probably need more practice
