Newbie post - learned dave now what?

ok this my first guitar related post. I've been playing for a little over a year now and can play most of dave's songs pretty accurately, however I'm getting a little bored with playing dave over and over again for myself and other people. I guess what I'm asking is where should I go from here? The reason I learned so much Dave was due to the accuracy of the tabs on DMBtas.com ... I hate sifting through shitty tabs on most sites. I think i'm just frustrated that I hit a plateau and don't know where or how to take my guitar playing to the next level. Any comments, pointers, or general help is appreciated.

If you like John Mayer, his stuff is fun to play. A little tougher than Dave for the most part, but cool chord voicings and shapes. I found this site to be one of the best: http://www3.sympatico.ca/g403z/

The best artist I've been introduced to since Dave (and Tim) is Jeff Buckley. If you don't know his stuff your seriously missing out on one of the greatest talents ever.

Don't pick an artist. Pick songs you want to learn. I can play plenty of Dave, but also lots of other stuff. That's the best way to go about it.

For good fingerpicking, Simon and Garfunkle songs (or Paul Simon solo). Beatles are always good, try fingerpicking Julia, or nice struming picking, like Norweigen Wood.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far they've been helpful. Any one know sites that have pretty accurate tabs for these artists besides the john mayer sites or should I just keep searching through stuff like olga.net and others. Also what classic guitar songs should I give some attention to learning. Stuff that requires a good amount of practice but will pay off big in the end. Thanks again ya'll

Two thoughts, play want you like, if you like the way a song makes you feel, learn it. Don't worry about others. People ask me to play songs like Freebird and Stairway and all those that "everyone" should know. Well I don't like those so I don't learn them. The song has to appeal to you. Second, try writing your own songs. It's difficult at first. I struggle with it. I saw no one ever became famous being a cover band. Why learn someone else's when you can make your own?

yeah I hear you on that stuff and i think i do that mostly play songs I like but sometimes songs I like don't have good tabs so i waste time learning crap, you know. Plus if learning some songs that i don't really like it makes them grow on me and start to like them more and more, but i definitely understand what you are saying. Secondly I am also struggling with wrting songs. I've have like 5 or six melodies i've been messing around with but it's lyrics that screw me over and i can't really sing so that sucks too HAHAHA. oh well -nate

I'm jealous if you're able to play DMB songs accurately after only 1 year on the 6-string.

I find it's very enjoyable to learn the songs you know by heart already, such songs are easier to learn and mean more to you.

Other than that I would find songs you like and go from there.

Ben Harper - good choice, early in his career he was tuning his acoustic 1 or 1/2 step down, some really soft beautiful tunes like Waiting on an Angel or Another Lonely Day, etc.

Bob Dylan - easy to sing, simple songs are easy to play and everyone knows Bob

Jeff Buckley - was mentioned - his strength relies on his amazing vocal abilities, good luck playing and singing these tunes. lol.

Jack Johnson- mentioned - barre chords and bluesy riffs, fun songs to sing and play and Jack is a Jack of all Trades, a very creative and talented man - recommended

John Mayer - mentioned - I hate 'em, he's too good on the guitar, I hate his voice, but if you like Dave you might like Mayer's guitar work, although some of it's trick stuff

David Gray - simple guitar work and amazing vocals, songs are easy to learn and require a capo , this guy's awesome

I'd also recommend Radiohead, Coldplay, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel .... I could go on and on, but the songs are up to you, I've ranted and raved enough.
