Grey Street then and now

I used to say Grey Street was an orgasm. Well, things have changed, same as my expression

Grey Street 2000-2002, an orgasm
Grey Street 2002-2003, a good fuck
Grey Street 2003-today, a quickie

I know they do so much for us, and I have no reason to tell them how to play their songs, but it really loses it's intensity and power when you cut it in half, as well as cut the jam in half now. I just can't listen to modern Grey Streets. I feel let down when I hear it cut off before the best verse (the third), and the intensity of the last chorus in 2000-2002. Sigh, I wonder if I will ever hear a full Grey Street again

I still think it's great, I think it has more energy now and the crowd gets into it more. But I'd like to see an 8 minute one soon.

Grey street contains some of his most poetic lyrics. Its a shame he wussed out and cut the last verse. The song needs the 3rd verse to have the full poetic effect. When cut, the song does have the sense of finality it once had. I know he may not have liked his own writing about forsaking God, but still the song lacks without it.

yeah ranting i hear you on this one - i think the lillywhite grey street is unbelievable, it just doesn't sound the same anymore with out the same things in it

I remeber hearing something about an explanation of the cut verse. Did anyone hear this explanation? I'd like to know. The old version is so kick ass.

i'm kind of a new DMB fan and always heard the truncated version of grey street.

i just found out today and heard the third verse....

what the heck are the thinking to leave that out????!!!

I downloaded " Times Talks-So Much To Say with Dave Matthews" from iTunes (it is a one hour nineteen minute interview with Dave from early 2004)...In the interview one of the audience members asks Dave why they cut the third verse from Grey Street. His response was that he and the band felt the song "took off more" with out the verse...and that he often thought about flip-flopping which verse would be removed but he just never bothered, but now that the question had been asked he would try to change up which verse was left out...

It is a very interesting interview, you should check it out if you have iTunes.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I prefer the longer version too but in the end it is their song and they can pretty much do whatever they like with it.

I read somewhere that they got really tired of playing it.

Carter has actually been quoted as saying that it's without question the entire band's favorite song.

i like every version of grey street fine enough, i find myself thinking that dave could take really any song and make it sounds original and great

the one on central parks pretty tight, yet i agree with everyone about cutting the last verse, it makes the song
