question about dave's style...

There aren't any dumb questions brotha. In answer to your question, yes, Dave does pretty much strum non-stop. His right hand has awesome rythm. He's got a great ability to do a ton of muting with his left hand so he can strum the shit out of single notes. This is very hard to do, but it's totally possible. When learning a Dave song, make sure you get the right hand (rythm) part down first. The left hand will follow. Try to seperate the right from the left. Another thing that might help is to watch some of the videos/DVD's. Check out Warehouse, Rhyme & Reason, and Lie In Our Graves (from the Chicago vid) for some examples.

he doesnt allways strum. Sometimes he just lifts the pick off the strings, but he is always moving his hand. good way to keep time.

he either is picking or strumming 80% of the time. but sometimes he does stop. blue water has many pauses

Dave makes the pick go up and down, he does this virtually non-stop. If you watch his style over the years you may have noticed that he only strums like a wild man on certain songs.

Watch Dave on t.v. nowadays and you'll notice that his strumming technique is much more controlled and more succinct. I've heard this this referred to as "Economy of Motion", meaning he doesn't waste energy by strumming wildly.

Sometimes he may not hit the strings but his motion is still up and down, I can only assume that this technique helps him keep the rythym.
