best acoustic pick-up

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a pick-up for me to put in my d15. Also I was wondering what modifications Dave had done on his acoustic guitars. thanks.

i had a EMG sound hole pick up in my d15 and it sounded pretty good. I also had a Rare Earth pick up in my Big Baby Taylor and it sounded great. There are many to choose from its just a matter of the persons preference and how much you would like to spend.

i think my electric has a L.R. Baggs pickup and if it sounds that on electric then it must sound really good on acoustic

on top of that... after a while they all pretty much sound the same... you need a good preamp to mess with bass / trebble / brilliance / middle (that's what makes the big difference) and any plugin acoustic player should use a sans amp... dave and tim swear by them as well... a sans amp is not an amp but a sort of post preamp thing that boosts the acoustic sound...great for when you plug into a PA system... i will be goingn with an LR Baggs for my new guitar however.

a few names that are not as well known but just as good, if not better than any mentioned so far: Pick Up the World and B-band pickups are just astounding. Check 'em out alongside several Fishman and Baggs setups at this site

If I was to get myself a pick-up(which I'm planning on doing), what can I expect in the way of installing it? Say I get the iBeam, is this something I can install or does it have to be professionally done? (I'm assuming professionally). Based on what I've read I think I'm leaning towards the iBeam, but that Pick Up The World #27 looks to be pretty good also. Any opinions? I have no experience with acoustic electronics. I really want to get better quality recordings of myself and I would assume an under the bridge pick-up is gonna be a huge improvement over the cheap computer mic I'm using now (why wouldn't it be, right?)

I read *somewhere* (for the life of me i can't remember where, i searched the nancies, ants, and bridge forums to no avail) that the d-15 has too much bass to get a good signal off a pickup (the mahogany only adds to the bass) - i've never tried to put a pickup in my d-15, so i don't know, you might want to investigate this though

Yes, it will be a huge improvement. I have a cheap Fender DG-11E that came with a cheap piezo pickup and it makes the guitar sound so much better when recorded. I posted a few songs awhile ago with it. If ya wanna see what I mean, check my profile for my site. Pizzzzzeace.

I think you're confusing me with the thread starter.....I don't have a D15, I have a Taylor 310.

There were several complaints about the iBEAM. I also looked at the Fishman Matrix Natural Pickup, and decided to go with it...

I'm pretty sure it's what Dave used for L@LC...

Fishman matrix pickups are excellent pickups. I have had on in my tacoma DM9 for about a year. The DM9 is a very bassy guitar and it is fully made of mahogony, but i still get an amazing acoustic sound out of it. I suggest getting a plug in and not a built in preamp. This way the structure of your guitar wont get tested. I love the way my matrix sounds. FISHMAN IS THE WAY TO GO.

lol that'd be me that you heard about the d15 having too much bass.. the d15 in my opinion is the best martin under $900 ... acousticly i think it sounds better then the d16rgt, but that's just my preference.. pikcing up a mahogany body is a bad idea.
