Congrats man I was proud of myself for that one too..it just takes time and effort, I've been working on the singing part of that song and i've gotten better at it, my problem is i always forget lyrics while 'im singing and i cant really do like dave and just make stuff up as i go, thats not my thing yet
"...Sing and dance I'll play for you tonight The thrill of it all Dark clouds may hang on me sometimes But I'll work it out..."

a little R&R
Rhyme and Reason was one of the first Dave songs I learned. 3 years ago, I was a sophomore at college - I wasn't that good but I was foolin' around with Dave stuff and I've been listening to LS at night on my cd player before going to bed and I'd play Rhyme and Reason over and over. And then one night I had a dream where I was playing it
kinda weird. But I got up that morning and tried to study for the exam I was supposed to be studying for, and said to hell with that, and went to a computer on campus and printed out the tab and brought it back home and started trying it. I did it slow at first, then kept trying to get up to speed, and like Pilot said, kept playing the riff over and over non stop. Anyway When I walked out of the bedroom after my hand was throbbing in pain, my roomates were staring at me and one of them said "you're driving us crazy playing that over and over" sorry I said
. Anyway, just thought I'd share that little story. I also dreamt one night that I could play Stairway. That dream didn't come true.
The thing about Dave songs is that you get hooked on them and they keep calling you back to play them. When I was learning The Stone I'd go to class and I just couldn't wait to get back home and play/practice it. They just have a unique effect on me and others by the sound of it. It's something special. Anyway, I'm out of breath from this long post
peace,
Ken

start off SLOW, and make sure the notes sound clear and that you have the rhthem of it in your head so you can translate it on the guitar. Listen to it a few more times and then go back and practice it. once you hand memorizes where to go then work on getting it faster. I would play along with the Listener supported version for practice when you get it up to speed. The accuracy will come with time.

I started on it wednesday night and played it non-stop for about 3 hours (your ring finger really starts to kill after about 45 minutes though). what i did was split the verse up into 3 parts (not including the part after the mute), so it was 3 "slide-note-note"'s if you know what i mean:
then i played each part individually until they were fast and accurate, then i started to play them together. the real hard part that i found was getting your ring finger from the last note of one of the parts to the next slide quickly, but that might just be my inexperience.
what i found that makes it sound right is with the slides, you should almost start the next slide before you finish the second "note" of the previous slide. if that makes any sense. so for example, in during the second part of the verse above, you do the slide, play the 6 and 5, and the transition from the 5 to the next slide (the 6->8 slide) should be as quick as you can get it. that makes it sound best in my 2 days playing it
haven't gotten the last part of the verse down, my pick hand doesn't move that fast yet. but i'm working on it
good luck

this was a weird song I never thought I'd be able to learn back when I was trying to, I stayed up one night though til like 3 am, i played the riff for probably about 4 hours straight and finally just had it, now it's simple...it's horrid to think of the time I spent on that stuff...

yeah, I spent hours upon hours on that song too when I was learning it. Even more time on The Stone. After awhile you tend not to play them because you've spent so much time practicing it. But then one day you'll get urge to go back and play it again. It's good to refresh those songs that you don't play as often anymore.gcom007 wrote:this was a weird song I never thought I'd be able to learn back when I was trying to, I stayed up one night though til like 3 am, i played the riff for probably about 4 hours straight and finally just had it, now it's simple...it's horrid to think of the time I spent on that stuff...

yeah, I got real sick of the stone and BOWA, and while I can whip BOWA off without a hitch now, I can easily screw up on stone because I didn't play it at all for so long and now I'm trying to play it again, but it's coming back...gravedigger wrote:yeah, I spent hours upon hours on that song too when I was learning it.
