DMB songs and church

Post by DJR »

need some input on this, i really wanna play a DMB song at this talent festival at my church, but i need some feedback
i've been throwing around some ideas and heres what i came up with-

tripping billies - my priest really likes the whole "eat drink be merry" part, plus thats from the bible, but i'd have to change the tequila line - hmm..

spoon - its about jesus, nuff said

one sweet world - i know the song well, it has a good theme

was also thinking of coldplay's see you soon - nice, soft song, i'm comfortable with playing and singing it

any more suggestions and/or input over these choices would be great - thanks everyone :D

One sweet world is a great idea. Its simple and easy but sounds great and has a neat message. How about JTR or Lie in our graves?

would they have a problem if you played:

Dancing Nancies
Rhyme and Reason
Say Goodbye
Don't Drink the Water
Halloween
Rapunzel
When the World Ends
deed is done (versions where he criticises god's decisions)
the Last Stop

or Dreamed I Killed God?

I am wondering if they would allow anything questioning or against god and religon.

. . . I wonder if they would get pissed if I did my songs Who Is God and Thngs We Say (both are negative looks at christianity and today's christian god).

I played Christmas Song and got a negative reaction.

Dreamed I Killed God would be hilarious, personality. I'd definitely want that video taped with close-ups of audience reaction.

I don't think Save Me would work unless you cut out the whole part of "by trying saving yourself." I see it as dealing with the pointlessness of religion and the humans ability to conquer life without, which I don't think the church would like at all.

I think you could get mixed reactions with Christmas Song, I would go ahead and try it just to see. I think Granny, Two Step, Everyday, and Where are you going would all be good to play at a church function. I would certainly play those at church if I went ;-)

Bible thumpers are way too close minded for DMB songs IMO. Well at least up in these here parts.

I don't think they are too closed minded, it's just that walking into a church and playing music with anti-religious concepts would be a bit like walking into a gay bar and talking about how much you disagree with homosexual lifestyles. You just don't do it; it's rude.

Two Step would be a great song to play, I think, but do you want a love song? If not, Everyday would be a good way to swing. Upbeat and positive, with a good swing to it.

Coldplay is a good call, too.

If you want actual Christian bands with a similar style, check out David Crowder. He has a good song called "Sweep Me Away" that's absolutley beautiful. Also, Christ Tomlin. Just avoid any collaberations he's done (typical pop, made to sell) and you'll be good.

you know i always saw that lyric as the complete opposite. during a live performance i saw you could hear what he was saying better and after that line he said

"as if the moon could shine"

i always thought he was saying that by itself the moon cannot shine and we cannot save ourselves.

thats why i thought it would be good for church, i might even try it sometime :)

I have to agree. The lyrics just kind of get to me after awhile.
