So I've been thinking....

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

I'm wondering the same thing. It drives me nuts that I can't sing and don't know if I have the potential to learn.

um, I was crap. I sounded so bad 4 years ago. Now, I am a pretty good singer. Just work at it, and you will find your range (some have more and are better at certian things, but you will discover your pros and cons by working on it).

You can definitely learn the technicalities of vocals, breathing, control, strengthening your voice. But if you don't have a nice tone, it's not going to change that.

On the other hand, look at people like Billy Corgan and Thom Yorke. Not the best tone, but they worked their asses off and made it. So if you're determined, go for it.

I like your voice, I think with some work it could be excellent. Go for it.

Yeah, you've got to know your range, know what you can and cannot do with your voice. Granted it may sound bad to you, but most people that think that end up sounding not all that bad. Just don't force it, or try to sound like someone else. I don't think that I have the greatest voice, but when I put a guitar in my hand and a few people around me to listen, they tell me that I don't sound as bad as I make myself out to be. Go for the lessons if you think it might help, but I wouldn't do it just to see if you really can sing or not. You'll just have to find your singing voice, it will come in time :-)

Anyone can sing to a somewhat harmonious state. Practice, just like you have to for everything else.

Listen to early Dave from 91 and then listen to the recent stuff. Dave's vocals have improved 10 fold. He used to sound whiny and very high pitched, but now he's grown so much vocally. Just an example though.

You definitely need to record yourself, that helps. You don't hear what other people hear.

I hate it when people say that you have it or you don't. That's complete bullshit. Obviously certain people are gonna have more natural ability than others for whatever reason but I think anyone can be a GOOD singer. The thing you have to keep in mind is that singing is HARD. You have to learn how and when to breath, how to sing different vowels, posture etc. These things have to be learned just like anything. That being said I think vocal lessons (if you find a good teacher) are an extremely good idea. You can be more than a decent singer if you put the work into it.
