should i go through an amp and mic the amp?

or

should i go straight from the guitar (xlr out, no preamp) to the pa?

an acoustic amp or an electric guitar amp?
if its an electric guitar amp I probably wouldnt plug it in-

Just use whatever one of them is the best quality. Ive had some good acoustic sounds come from a PA without a preamp, but it wasnt a cheapo P.A.
If you have a really nice clean amp, then use it. But Generally a nice PA is better(even without a preamp)
