Do you think highschool music theory classes will give the jist or gist, whichever it's spelled of music theory to get someone such as me, a novice guitar player needing music knowlage, on the track to learning it?

I just bought a book of Jazz Licks by Jody Fischer.

I have a question for any and everyone. Be honest, who uses a metronome judiciously?

hmmm, i never took any theory classes in high school, but we did start to have one recently. its called music appreciation. you learn the basic stuff in thost types of classes. i would go ahead and take it if you say you are a novice. you wont get into any real heavy stuff, but you will probably learn notes, how to read music, and so forth.

even if you take the class and you find that its too easy, it wont hurt. you'll just have a nice slack-off class.

There's always a handful of ass clowns in music classes. You've been warned.

what exactly is going on during the verses or tripping billies?

um... music?

let me try to explain something for you. i'm assuming you are looking for some complicated theoretical explanation for why the verse for that song is hard or why it sounds cool. i find more often then not when people think about theory, they think of something that can explain something intangible, and thats not what it is. theory is just used to organize music, not explain or define it.

so basically, the answer "music" isn't so bad.

if you were looking for something else, please try to clarify

A, D, B
A, D, F#m, G

is that right or am i way off?

I enjoyed that answer...seriously.
What I've learned about theory is that there is no substitute for using your ears and listening to artist's that you like and understading what they're doing. A book can tell you all of the guidelines but educating your ear is all up to you. What you have to remember about Dave is that he doesn't use complex melody/harmony he's uses complex rhythem. Not always but mostly.

Btw I meant ass clown as in know-it-all but there's one of those in every class.
