what instrument is this?

im not too keen on other string instruments than guitar and bass
if anyone has heard 'i shall not walk alone' by ben harper (one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard), could you tell me what instrument it is playing along side the guitar? im thinking cello but i know im wrong

i was thinking that at times but overall it sounds too low

i don't have a recording of the song handy, but if it's a string sound and is too low to be a violin, then it's either a viola or a cello.

yeah, im almost certain it's a viola, not deep enough to be a cello, but it very closely resembles a violin.

Its a violin/fiddle played by Patrick Brayer. I had an old acoustic guitar magazine with a ben harper article and it talked all about this song. By the way I love that song.

Ben Harper's the man...I've got the box set, good stuff...He plays with a slide on a lot of songs, gives him a unique sound...
