There have been alot of threads on Neon, but if anyone still has questions about it, Mayer explains the first half of it (verse, prechorus, interlude) in this months Guitar World Acoustic. One of the things he explains is his right hand technique, he does use just the thumb and index finger. So if you're interested check it out...there's also a cool article on Nick Drake...

i picked it up. steve howe is on cover. the mayer article doesn't help too much, but the nick drake is sweet (if it wasnt for the weird tuning)

yeah, you are killing me with all these questions of "whos is this guy?"
his recordings have other musicians, but im not sure if he ever had a permanent band

I don't think he did. He had musicians he constantly recorded with, but as for having a real "band" I don't think so, since he was too shy/nervous when performing live so I doubt there was ever a band and it wouldn't fit in conjunction with his character, which was more the isolated, introverted type.
