tune it down like you are doing drop D but keep going until it matches the 3rd fret on the A string.

everyone talks about dave's right hand being a metronome...like for the stone, you just strum your ass off and if its a downstroke play it as a downstroke and if its an upstroke, etc. well for this song use your thumb and index that way. move them as if you're picking 16th notes alternately with your thumb and finger, and then only hit the relevant notes in neon. this takes TONS of practice. But then you can play it with perfect timing, similar to the way dave plays what would you say or rhyme and reason...with a constant rhythm, only hitting the notes needed

decided to learn this tonight, by far hardest song every attempted, much harder than classical gas or any of dave's stuff.

so its possible to accurately pick the non bass strings with the index fingers??

I beleive Mayer only uses one finger to hit the higher notes & Thumb for Bass

i dont think its thumb, index, thumb, index,

the only other possibility is a downstroke with the index

It's definately rotating back and forth between the thumb and index, check out this months guitar world acoustic...mayer explains the first half of the song and his technique.
