He'll be around a lot longer than Jack Johnson cuz Johnson is already gone.

I saw a part of that Mayer DVD, can't remember what it was called...but just from watching him in his hotel room and getting a feel for his personality, you can tell he would be a pain in the ass to be in a band with.

Although I hate everything he does because of his pitiful voice, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he has put out some mediocre stuff. He's only achieved a lot of popularity because face it...look at this current competition...stuff like Good Charlotte. From what I've seen on TV, he seems like the type of musician who needs a marketing plan, or a pushed image, to sell a ton of records.

He is quite young though, so if he isn't a cocky sell-out by now and tries to achieve greater things, I'd say he could amount to something.

Whether he sticks around or not I can tell you he probably won't be surfing the net talking trash about someone who could play circles around him.

[I think his guitar skill best places him as a lead guitarist for someone else fronting up a band. John sucks as a front man. Everytime I've seen him play, all I see is John playing for John...not for the fans. His lyrics are for the fans, for those teeny boppers who love his cheesy lyrics and pay top dollar to see him and hear him talk too much between songs about stupid teenager shit.
I said that same thing about him being a selfish player last time I saw him. Guess what? The boards ripped me apart. I saw John twice before both in 2001 and he was great. But once he got some recognition he was not the same -- Kind of doing it for himself attitude.

Anyway, he is a great musician but he just doens't appeal to me.

His songs are good, but they just don't stick with you like DMB. There aren't any of his songs that make me think "shit, I've got to learn this" The power just isn't there.

He gives me the impression that he would do ANYTHING to be a famous musician. Whether or not that is a good thing is a different story, but I think that he will stick around in the music industry for a while. I think that if songwriting didn't work out for him he would even resort to a boy band or something worse just to stay in the spotlight. He seems to be one of those people that crave attention but don't want to make friends with anyone.

As for him being a lead guitarist for someone else, that would NEVER happen. He wants the spotlight too much. If he was in a band with someone else singing it would totally be a Eddie Van Halen/David Lee Roth feuding band. He really just seems too stuck on himself to give up any part of the spotlight.

In one of the new guitar magazines, there is an interview with John Mayer and Buddy Guy. There are definitely times in the article where Mayer seems to be so self-indulged and down right snobby towards other guitarists. He talks once about seeing people play guitar that "don't have it" and how its so frustrating for him. Meanwhile, Buddy Guy, the consumate bluesman and professional comes right back saying that even players who don't have great chops can teach him something about playing guitar. Guy just makes Mayer look so pitiful and shallow.

The writer of the article also talks about seeing these two play together in a show and he describes Mayer as hopelessly looking for something to play during one of Guy's solos.

I think Mayer has talent, but until he learns a little bit of humility, he'll never be great.

yep.

he's a good guitarist but he steals a lot from vaughan. he can write catchy hooks but his lyrics leave much to be desired. if only he'd just shut up and play.

i just don't think he has the heart for it. as kanter said, he is a musician, but he does so many things that would make mayer seem like he's more into it as a hobby to get chicks than him actually thriving from it. he talks about it in too much of a methodical fashion than having any real passion for it. he acts for it more than thrives from it, and that separates the big boys from the punks in the long run.

All his songs are about relationships. Besides, most poeple are great right away. Well, I mean Dave's deepest shit was in the first few CDs'. I have yet to have one John Mayer song make me say "Damn, you know it!" Besides, his following is mostly chicks, and we all know about their commitment level. jk, really
