Alternate Tunings and String Breakage

Anyone know how many steps you can raise a normal set of medium strings before you're going to start popping them off? In the tuning im in now, I have a few set a half step above standard, and I'd like to put them a full step up for others, but it just seems like they're about ready to snap off as it is. What really sucks is that the weakest string on the guitar (the G) always seems like it needs to be the one that needs raising the most for funky tunings. So the question is, when are my strings going to snap off hitting me in the eye blinding me for life?

The strings will snap off hitting you in the face and blind you once you go just a little too far tuning them!

Ahhhh, you can raise them at least a half step I know.....after that I'm too big a wuss

yeah that G is hard to tune up(or down)
Just tune every thing else down a whole step, leave the G alone, and use a capo-

I don't know why i didnt think about using a capo and tuning everything else relative.......its going to take a while for me to figure out how with the capo...but i think i'll get it eventually. By they way, im trying to tune to DAEAEE.

Actually, the tuning I was after was CGCGGD......then capoed at the second fret for DADAAE. Open that tuning sounds cool as all hell though.

John Pearse (among others I'm sure) makes slack key strings. They are designed for alternates tunings and may help with intonation particularly when your tuning down. It might make a nice difference. Beyond that you have to get a git with a longer scale length.

i don't think you should have a problem bringing your G up to an A. "name" by goo goo dolls i think uses DAEAAE or something, and i had no problem with raising the G to an A. i use martin light string by the way.
