let you down strumming?

how many up/down strums do u guys do for each cord?...do u finish each cord with a hard upstroke?....i think i almost got it but when i listen to an acoustic version by dave i feel my timing is slightly off...any help is appreciated...cheers

I can play the verse fine, not that little part where it goes'i have no lid upon my head' though.. if i had the time, i'd record it for you, but i'm busy right now

its a really goofy rhythm, but you just keep your hand strurumming at a fairly quick pace throughout the whole song... each chord is strummed 5 times, 3 downstrokes and two upstrokes(D U D U D). Its really hard to hear it, but what you do is while keeping the strum going, you hit the strings 5 times, and switch chords during the next upstroke. The very next downstroke is the first of the 5 strokes of the next chord. Playing along with a D+T version helps out a lot, theres a really really good version on 2/20/97 if you have access to any shows... otherwise pm me or somethign and i'll send you a copy.

I've been working on this song too. The chords aren't hard, it's the rhythm of the "I have no lid..." part. The verse rhythm isn't bad, listen to 2/6/97 or 2/20/97.

Let you down is one of the many songs that fell victim to Steve Lillywhite's "cheerio good chap, lets turn David down and Timmy up," policy. The guitar you hear most clearly is timmy's and I have no clue what he is playing. I'd check the tab book to be sure. Anyway, I usually just play each chord in 3/4 time. For the lid upon my head part, I do the same except as soon as I finish the first bit I move to the other chords.

actually, that is daves guitar you hear. listen to the live version off of this year's warehouse package and you will hear the same guitar part.

and when you say "usually play it in 3/4," i hope you mean all the time, because the song IS in 3/4

No, dave's guitar is audible on the crash version, but in the background. The main guitar that is first audible, playing the little licks, is timmys.
You do have to listen for daves guitar but it is playing exactly what is shown on kanter's tab. I have absolutely no clue how timmys licks are played.
I did mean the whole thing is in 3/4. I said that because it is easy to get confused with the timing with tims guitar doing all those little licks.

A lot of Tim's licks on the album (and the live versions) are based around an Em bar chord at the seventh fret. A lot of it is pretty simple actually. I must admit though that strumming gave me a bit of trouble.

I hear dave's parts over timmy's in the studio version.. i have to try to listen to hear timmy's.. so i'm staying with what josh is saying

the (U) is a ghost note... just don't hit the strings...

so in really is:
