First Post -- Satellite Question

Post by Boomsheka »

I've been reading and watching for a while but I have hit a bump that maybe someone would have advice to help me out with. Some quick background, 25 years old, just moved to Dallas Texas from Omaha Nebraska (traded corn for cattle), Been playing guitar for less than one year, enjoy absolutely every genre of music, I do have a preference for Dave's style or I wouldn't enjoy this community so much, kanter and crew I have to give it up to you folks

I'll spare you guys the what song should I start with questions, I can search just fine. But I do have a question about the Satellite Intro. I can do the first stretch fine (4,6,8 where the index is on the E string, middle on A string, and pinky on D string) but when playing the second set of 3 notes the (4,6,8 where the index is on the A string, middle on the D string and Pinky on the E string) I can't for the life of me get my pinky to not lay over the A & D stings. It rolls on it's side knuckles facing the sound hole and it mutes my other notes. Anyone experience that and how did you get past it? I don't want to play it another way, I do know there are easier ways to play it with smaller stretches but I want to learn this way.

Do you guys maybe not lay the pinky down until after you have hit the A and D string? Any help would be appreciated.

just go through it slowly making sure your pinky is not hitting it

get that motion down and then start to speed up...you'll get it
B+P by offer only...thank you

Dave usually "slaps" his fingers on each note, you don't really need to hold your pinky on the string. By the time you hit that note on the E your finger should be off the 4 on the A string. Does that help?

just give it time...soon your fingers will stretch. amazingly. then you'll be able to hit it no problem. trust me, give it a little bit.

Its Ok for the pinky to lay on the D and A strings while it is fretting the E string....because immediately after you pick the E string (8th fret) you lift your pinky up at the same time that you fret the D string (5th fret) with your index finger and pick it. That way, your pinky never mutes anything.

Speen said this...but I tried to word it differently....cause...I don't know why :)

Wecome to DMBTabs by the way....glad you are here!!!

Thank you guys for the quick replies, this is one hell of a place, you guys rock.

That makes alot of sense about slapping the fingers down one at a time, I was trying to have all three in place and then pick each one and then set up for the position of the next three.

I know kanter put alot of work into the dvd video of satelite and I have all the codecs and have watched it but is there one floating around that he or someone else has done of the different pieces of Satellite that I can scope out to help me along. I have went threw hundereds of posts and I couldn't find one from dusty, bo, or kanter outside of the dvd preview

It's actually a lot easier the faster you play it....because when you are going from note to note, the finger before your next note will be off.

Make sure you use alternate picking...it adds speed with less movement.

I had trouble at first. Pinkys take some time to adjust and get them strong and nimble enough to move. Since we don't use our pinkys so much in day to day life, you have to keep working it, and stretching it, til it really gets moving. It took me about 7 months to really actualy start using it well enough to not screw up with it.

Hey, I live in Allen, TX and am 26/m. Let me know if you want to try to get together to jam sometime.

I am pretty busy, but I love to find free time to jam if you ever want to get together to work on learning some Dave stuff. I've also been playing around a year.

Peace

you alternate pick satellite? :?:

The hardest part for me is landing my middle finger closer to the front of the fret. i always lands in the middle and the string buzzes

Boomsheka, i saw this in a book about practicing picking like this..

if you practice sloppy 100 times, chances are that the 101st time is going to be sloppy too. If you practice clean, slow, and precise 100 times, there is a really good chance the 101st time will be clean too.

i just started playing guitar 3 months ago and can pretty much nail this intro *almost* as fast as dave so just keep practicing man!

All I can say is practice slowly, in small sections, and everyday. Without even noticing you'll start to speed up and the intro will just groove. Hope that helps.
