in terms of quality, how would taylor's DN4 compare to the 414ce?
I want a dreadnought with no cutaway. I also don't need electronics. But the DN series is supposed to the "affordable option" so that automatically makes me think cheap. It's a $500 difference so i know it can't be that bad but it looks so stripped down compared to the 414ce.
after writing it out, it seems like a stupid question
I cant tell you too much about the guitar, but I do know a little. The 400 series and up are all made in the US, San Diego to be exact. The lower end models are made in Tecate, Mexico. But they do have a lot of quality control guys who make sure the guitars are being built up to Taylor's specs. The 410 is made with all solid woods and it sounds pretty good if you looking for that dread sound. I have a 414ce with rosewood back and sides, and I love it. The quality is definitely top notch, the 400 series just doesn't have all the fancy inlays and other cosmetic features that the higher end models have, including the top quality picked woods. Still great looking piece that has an awesome sound to go along with it.
The 400 series are very nice guitars. Personally, I always preferred the 500 series and up due to wood choices and bracing, but the 400s are all very nice.
I would recommend though that you schedule a day to drive to a city that has a nice guitar store. Buying guitars on the internet just isn't a great idea. Every guitar sounds different... even the same model. You can walk into a guitar center and play 3 of the same model guitar, and they may all sound/play different. Guitars are personal and if you are willing to drop this kind of money on a guitar (compared to say a martin DR for $500), I would want to play it first. Just my opinion though.
