Question regarding Gravedigger

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Question regarding Gravedigger

Post by unccharlotte07 »

Whenever Dave plays Gravedigger, it sounds kind of muted. Does anyone know if he is palm muting? I've watched videos of him playing and it doesn't look like it. Anyone know?

i definitley think so... if you watch and listen to the new charlie rose video it seems like hes doing some slight palm muting, especially during the intro/verse

Dave almost NEVER palm mutes from everything I've ever seen. I may be wrong....but I can't think of any instances he ever palm mutes. Any muting is done w/ the left hand

It doesn't look like he's doing anything with his left hand, unless there's some kind of muting that I don't know how to do. It almost seems as if he's able to palm mute while strumming. I don't know if this is possible. I tried it, and I can't do it right, but I'm sure if it can be done Dave can do it!

i do believe that dave palm mutes very lightly on a lot of his songs such as "the stone" and gravedigger. if you listen to the acousic version off of some devil and try to play it, it just won't sound right but if you very lighlty mute with your right hand it will be almost perfect :)

Do you keep your palm at the very bottom of the strings and then just slightly move your wrist to strum? I find palm muting kind of difficult to do personally.

He most definitely DOES NOT PALM MUTE on the Stone, that is all his ring finger of his LEFT hand.... It might sound impossible, and I haven't figured it out yet, but thats what he does. Palm muting means that you have your palm over all the strings, which wouldn't produce the sound of the notes, just a chirpy noise when you normally mute a string.

in the Farm Aid '02 video it looks kinda like he's just resting his right hand lightly on the bridge while he strums. Just a very light muting, maybe?

that may be, but Dave usually just sets his right hand on the bridge, he isn't touching any strings with it though

You might be right, & I think Dave does that a lot actually. I have been able to do this for a while, it's not that hard once you get used to it. Just choke the pic a bit & hit the strings w/ your hand the same time as the pic does. I prefer this method of muting a lot of the times as opposed to left-handed muting. I play many a Jack Johnson tunes, which have lots of muting; he's does just about all his muting w/ his left hand...easier to do, but harder to master IMO.

no no no you misunderstood me. i am well aware of the muting he does with his fretting hand but there is also some going on with his strumming hand. he doesn't do it to choke out the strings so you can't hear it like you usually do with palm muting, but rather he does it VERY lightly so it produces more of a muffled sound almost giving it more bass. if you get the kfog video you can hear it very well because he does it at the beginning but goes to normal strumming later in the song.

i can make a recording if you'd like :)

i didn't misunderstand you at all, Dave mutes all the strings except for the one he plays, thats why it sounds like that.... he can only do that with his left hand. I am pretty sure this is correct because there have been a million posts on the stone

Dave doesn't palm mute the stone.. he does indeed rest his hand on the bridge, but that's not muting anything.. i can basicly play it with all the left hand muting, and palm muting sounds like total shit and/or ass, whichever you prefer to say, compared to left hand muting
