I have read this also, however it is incorrect. If you look at the specs for most builders (martin included) you'll find that the thickness of the Taylor tops falls in line with the rest.juineaux wrote:I read somewhere that martins age better than taylor, because taylor uses a thinner wood for their tops. This makes them sound great when you first get them, but they dont change a whole lot. But a martin uses a thicker top which will sound really nice(after 20 yrs).

solid wood gets better with time, and it depends on the conditions under which its kept and played... supposedly placing it in front of a loud speaker will open it up because of the vibration, possibly better than playing it. since martins have been around much longer, theyve had longer to age.

I bet it varies from guitar to guitar and from wood to wood. We all know Brazillian Rosewood that has been played every day for eighty years is the most beautiful sounding wood ever.
I am starting to see the light of "marrying the guitar" instead of just dating one. I think it's all about playing the guitar as often as possible and getting it to open up for you. Spruce takes months to years, Back and side woods (which are usually harder) take years to decades. So maybe the guitars and I can grow together.
I razz Martin owners hard, but the fact of the matter is no one makes a better bluegrass dread. Although I think my 710 is just as good if not better for a different sound. Martins are awesome guitars.
