I highly doubt that to have a custom martin built that its going to be cheap..cheap being 2500-3000, unless its a really shitty ass guitar. The reason why the prices are the way they are is because of the fact they produce so many. Think about telling RCA or whoever to make a tv thats completely different from whats out there now. That means they can't mass produce that one tv, hence higher cost. So yea, a true custom guitar will run you a pretty penny.

but i was under the impression that every martin is custom made

anywho, to the person talking about the guitar from ELDERLY, it is used, and not a custom purchase from Martin, so thats why its only $2400

not every one.... but a good portion of the ones i try oout at my local shop have martin custop shop invoices stuck to the price tags... i dont think its a huge deal if you go through some kind of dealer

now, is it just a few bits a pieces or the whole shits and bittles? Im not talking about having gold tuners instead of chrome making your guitar custom all of a sudden, but Im talking about having to start your guitar from scratch, making it your very own type of custom...

you can do whatever you want, from modifying one to creating one from scratch using martin's basic elements:

check out the pdf catalog, it shows a bunch of stuff and says you have to do it through a dealer

I was referring to a guitar that I got priced through Buffalo Bros with the Martin Custom Shop. I asked them to price a guitar identical to a DM3MD. They said they could do it but without Dave's sig inlayed at the 12th fret. I was quoted a price of $2400 for this guitar, which in my opinion beats the hell out of the $4000 I see DM3MD's going for. And for the exact (almost) guitar.

on a side note...while getting a guitar that is different from the standard (thus having to be built through the custom shop) does substantially raise the price, it (imho) is worth the money because:

a) it's getting the personal attention of a Custom Shop builder rather than just going down the assembly line

b) Martin's Custom Shop builds the guitar, then gives it a week "settling in" period, then rechecks it to make sure it meets their standards then gives it their stamp of approval and send it your way. Regular production line guitars don't get that level of TLC. Martins have of late been pretty inconsistent, but I have played several custom shop guitars and every one of them has been outstanding, so ordering a custom virtually eliminates your chances of getting a "dud"

actually you might even be able to get the dave inlay if you gave them a copy of the signature.... that site makes it look like you can do just about anything if youre willing to pay the price- just pick and choose from teh woods and body styles and such and make whatever you want

The price was $ 2650 with a sig inlayed (presumably your own, which would be pretty cool) but I actually asked the guy at Buffalo Bros. what would happen if I just sent them a copy of Dave's sig, and he said they more than likely would catch on and refuse to do it.

Sounds like Martin's Custom shop is far superior (at least in price) to Taylor's. We pay out the wazoo.
