Gibson Chet Atkins SST owners...

i have only heard it referred to as a solid body acoustic so i'm sticking with that... and Gibson agrees with me, here is a direct quote from their site
"Gibson Montana has enhanced the performance of its popular "solidbody acoustic" design with the introduction of the Chet Atkins Studio. "

yes, yes. It is an acoustic guitar, and yes, it must be amplified, thus, I kinda think everyone is right. I would rightly agree that it is a solidbody acoustic however. Either way, I'm not really sure it matters how you classify it.

just thought I'd also chime in that if you install a fishman or non-stock pickup in the chet, you loose the functionality of the tone control dials. Just something else to think about.

jrm - Is it a big hassle to find the right tone if I get a pickup installed? Like explain more about it. Im completely new to this, so some of these questions might sound dumb

i think he means that you will need a preamp or some kind of EQ to make it sound how you want it

the preamp that comes stock in the chet is not compatible with other pickup systems (ie. fishman pickups), therefore the knobs up top become unusable. This is why Dave's chets all have a strip of black electric tape covering the controls up top... he just can't use em.

Do I find it hard to get a good tone out of the chet? no, not really. It all depends on your taste. To amplify the guitar you're going to have to plug into something, ie. an amp, a p/a system with a sound board, amp simulator, etc... So you can always get your eq out of the amp or the sound board, or whatever you're plugged into. I've played mine out of almost every option and get great tone out of it. I guess it all comes down to you! Are you able to eq an amp well? Can you eq yourself well on a board/have a good soundman that can do it for you? It may not be a big deal.

My buddy has a chet that is stock as a rock and it gets great tone too. When I play it, I don't even have them eq the board. I just tell the soundguy to set it flat and then I mess with the knobs on the guitar. So either way, you can get great tone out of the chet. If you're unhappy with your current tone, then perhaps you should change out your pickups. But if you think you're tone's pretty sweet, then it might not be worth it.
