Expensive Martins/Taylors

has anyone played a martin D-50 Deluxe or a Taylor presentation model? i know the taylors get to around $10000, i dont know about the d-50. im just wondering, ive never seen a guitar like that up close... i bet theyre both amazing though. i wish i could at least play a high end high end guitar (i know that sounds weird, but it makes sense if you think about it)

Well, I must say - That d50 looks like one hell of an instrument.

Personally I think they are all ugly. Way too much inlay for my taste. I feel it ruins the guitar to have that much inlay.

That being said...I would still like to play one if I had the chance.

Peace,

i personally think that unless youre a frightening musician, you wont be able to tell the difference between guitars upwards of 5,000$. after that point, its more like your expectance of the guitar makes it sound better. just the knowledge that youre playing a piece of wood that's worth like 10,000 dollars makes it sound awesome. i really think its too much to pay, not worth it at all. dont like all that inlay, either. i think it looks nasty

Guys,

I need some help if you wouldn't mind. I have two guitars in mind that I want to buy and i was wondering which would be better to play primarily acoustic Dave. The Martin HD-28V or the Martin D-41 Special? Dave plays the HD-28V but the D-41 Special has nicer tonewoods and it is much prettier. Thank You!

Looks like you just answered your own question. Don't buy a guitar just because someone else plays it.

the only part of that D-50 I like btw is the back. The rest is just gaudy.

I agree with the comments though, if you can find a $2000 guitar that sounds like a $10,000 guitar, more power to you and it actually might even look nicer cause it won't be overloaded with inlay

They are pretty much the exact same guitar, other than some cosmetic differences. In terms of tonewoods, the D-41 gets one grade higher. I played lots of D-41s, 42s, 45s, and 28s, and settled on the HD-28V. My opinion, it sounded as good as any of the 40 Series Martins and looked better to boot. Don't care for the cosmetics on most of the 40 Series, but of all of them, the 41 Special looks the best.

I would be pretty sure that if you were to blind test a 28V and a 41 Special, you would have a hard time telling them apart. It's when you add a price tag to the picture (i.e. you see which guitar is being played) that your mind plays games with you.

Either way, both are excellent guitars and you will be happy either way. And, as someone else mentioned, don't buy a guitar just because Dave plays it. Buy it because you play it and you like it. I bought my HD-28V because I fell in love with it.

The 50 looks amazing, could one even play that guitar outside of their home?

I just picked up a 1986 Martin D35 (lefty) from craigslist and i love it.

if you budget between $1K and $2.5K you can purchase an amazing instrument.

i prefer martins and i did notice that you can get more for less money with martin, meaning there are more models available at from the range of $599-$1K

also, it's been noted in this thread that appointments look nice but they don't change the tone of your guitar and another thought, i gig out and as such i need a pickup in my guitar, my guitars (i have a couple of martins) all sound mint without amplification (the d35 doesn't need it, ha) but if i skimped on pickups/electronics my guitar would sound like sh*t on stage. on that same idea, a medium priced guitar that is quality and playable can sound better if you purchase a good preamp/pickup.
