How do they put together songs in a studio ??
Do they record each instument separately, then put them all together? or Do they do it all the together.. or is it a little of both?? just curious?
Its like... getting two birds stoned at once. (Ricky-trailor park boys).

DMB usually does a mixture. I remember reading that for the first album (UTTAD) Dave and Tim recorded the guitar parts by recording 4 guitar tracks (2 of dave, 2 of tim) of the exact same thing for each song and then just mixed together the best sounding ones, which is why one speaker is Dave and one speaker is Tim when you listen to that album. they said that they sat in two rooms facing each other with a glass wall between them and recorded them like that. I also remember the band saying somewhere that one of the albums they recorded basically all of them in the same room, but i don't recall where I read it or which album it was. But I would imagine that a majority of the time they recorded drums and bass together, then put the guitars on top of that, then added Sax and Violin last. This would explain why some of the incomplete Lillywhite songs don't have Boyd or LeRoi on them, because they didn't record their parts yet.
It's all mixed together after the fact (for the most part). Thats why studio recordings tend to sound more sterile but also a lot more lush and layered. There are none of the tecnical problems associated with recording multiple parts at the same time so a whole shit load of tracks can be mixed together.

On the Early Dave Days video , there is something from the studio work , where they talk about how Dave wanted to sing when recording the guitar tracks , because he did better that way , imagine that , being better on the guitar when singing at the same time instead of just playing the damn guitar , thats a rare case if you ask me

I don't know if its that he feels more comfortable with the guitar parts while he's singing. I think he just feels more comfortable singing while playing guitar. Have you ever seen him sing without a guitar, even when he's not playing the guitar?DustyDave wrote:On the Early Dave Days video , there is something from the studio work , where they talk about how Dave wanted to sing when recording the guitar tracks , because he did better that way , imagine that , being better on the guitar when singing at the same time instead of just playing the damn guitar , thats a rare case if you ask me
when dave sings without a guitar he looks so confused, like he doesn't know what to do with his hands.winglet82 wrote:I don't know if its that he feels more comfortable with the guitar parts while he's singing. Sting is the same way except he plays the bass which is apparently a lot harder to play and sing at the same time.DustyDave wrote:On the Early Dave Days video , there is something from the studio work , where they talk about how Dave wanted to sing when recording the guitar tracks , because he did better that way , imagine that , being better on the guitar when singing at the same time instead of just playing the damn guitar , thats a rare case if you ask me
