Well, I'm finally mic'd up and ready to post an mp3 or two. Here's my take on What You Are. I don't think there's much room for improv on this one so it's pretty much how Dave plays it (atleast I think so). PLEASE don't hesitate to throw some feedback my way, both good and bad. Oh, and no, there are no vocals on this one - if you ever heard my singing voice you'd thank me!

While I prefer the tuned down version (mainly for a fuller sound at the Bm-A-E part), it's just too much of a hassle so I stuck with the standard tuning way.

I'm impressed. This may not be the greatest feedback, just saying it was good and all. But I liked it...I've never tried to play that song...but I will now

good to see that you got your mp3 posted. a couple of comments: the rhythm of the verse riff (the individual note part) seemed a little different than what dave plays it as, and you played the song with a very fast tempo, it seemed like you were almost trying to rush through it. but other than that, it sounded real good. i liked the improv run-down that you did during the chorus, it fit nicely. so just slow down the pace a bit, and take your time, dont rush things too much, and it sounds great.

Nice clean sound.
Your have the intro riff wrong.
You have the chorus riff wrong.
Rhythm seems a bit off on the bridge.

You've been working on it for less than 8 minutes. Give it time.

Thanks all for the opinions so far.....I appreciate it.
As for the tempo, I agree, I have a bad habit of playing EVERYTHING too fast.
Pilot, on the chorus, I threw in the 1x3 chord just to add a bit more to it. I swear I've seen Dave throw that extra chord (albeit tuned down 2 1/2 steps) in there also. Anyone else ever see that?
As for the opening riff, I know there's a note or two I omitted but I didn't think it had really any effect on the overall sound.
I would love to hear other people's take on this tune just so I have something to compare mine to.

ok, mike...You know, I am not at all a fan of this song in the first place..in fact I hate it..., but........you got song down, what else can you say?...I noticed before people were talking about tempo or something...if I were you I would try to play along with the cd, and make sure rhythm and tempo is dead on...other than that, it sounded like "what you are" to me. lets hear some vocals now!!!lata!

PilotC, fuck man. you're fuckin' brutal. Why don't you post some shit for a change and see if you like getting responses like this. sheeesh
Ironmike, I think it was great. The intro riff sounded really cool, even if (god forbid) it isn't exactly how Dave plays it. You're timing is spot on, and I like the quick tempo. It's a tough cover to pull off, and I think you did very strongly. Good job, now if you just get the nerve to sing

Lighten up dude. I was just giving my opinions on it. I didn't say "you suck at this, and you suck at that". I simply pointed things out. His response didn't seem like he was pissed, so why do you need to blow up at me?
By the way, I posted my Gravedigger cover a few months ago. But see, now if I post another, you will find everything wrong with it and point it out to me. So I'll wait until you let off a bit of steam before I post something.

don't worry, I kicked the dog for about an hour so I let off all my steam so feel free to post your covers. I promise I won't do what you did. It just bugged me how you so bluntly said this was wrong, this was wrong, and that was wrong. without saying why it was wrong nor without saying anything positive about it. It's as if you can't be bothered to say anything except what you immediately noticed. I thought it was rude, but that's just me.
peace,
Ken
