Help muting the D string in Tripping Billies

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I try to mute the D in the begining and then for the last jamout, I let it ring, it is a nice contrast. I think, from what I see and hear on the ST video, thats what Dave does too??? Whatca think?
