Help Wanted!

Post by APMJ3 »

I have a Takamine acoustic and have only been playing for about 2 months. I have Elixir extra lights right now. Just the other day I picked up a friends guitar and to my suprise his strings were so much 'looser' than mine. After asking what kind of gauge strings he had he told me mediums. How is it that my much lighter strings are heavier than his mediums? Being a beginner I would like lighter strings for now. Could it be the way I string my guitar? Or is it my bridge?
Thanks

You may just need a good setup. If the neck needs to be adjusted, it could be putting extra tension on the strings, which makes them feel 'heavier.' Also, it will feel this way if the action is high. Take it to a good shop, tell them a little about your playing style, and have them do a setup. This should help quite a bit.

if you're a beginner, it definitely couldn't hurt to throw on some thicker strings to strengthen those fingers up

it could be the brand, you will be better off in the long run with heavier strings.

Use whatever strings are comfortable to your playing style.
