Playing in fifths

could someone explain the concept behind it and an example or 2 ....i know you put a capo on 2 to do this.....i was thnking about doing this when me and my buddy plays 2 acousitcs

If its what I think you mean, just play every note as a fifth above the note your buddy plays.

Ie: instead of E play A.

C would be A and D would be B?

A fifth would be the fifth note up from the key your playing in. A fifth up from C would be G and D would be A. The capo position would be detirmined by the key your playing in but you really don't NEED a capo. The other guitar can play various intervals to get a whatever sound desired , it deosn't have to be fifths. Some intervals to try: minor 3rd, perfect fourth, major sixth, minor/major 7th. The key to good accompaniment is to experiment and switch things up constantly. If your not familiar with intervals I suggest reading about them as they are the building blocks of harmony, melody, and basically music in general. Very good stuff to know.

While we're on this.. I never really learned the names of all the chords.. I just looked up tabs and stuff to learn songs and pick up the rest on my own.. I was just wondering like where all the chords are position.. I only know open chords. Plus i've only been playing for about a year.. Any help would be awesome, thanks..

you dont go about learning chords by memorizing every single one, you have to know how to construct them yourself

what? i've never heard of "playing in fifths". why would you use a capo.

are you talking like playing the same chords in new position so like capo 2 G-shape would be played along with someone with no capo playing an A chord. i'm confused by terminology.

yeah, the concept that they are talking about is pretty damn stupid if you ask me, if you play every chord a fifth up along with the tonic, its gonna sound like absolute shit

I played around with it a little and it's hit or miss. It doesn't sound good for every chord. That's why it's important to switch things up. Even if it sounded good all the time it would get pretty boring rather quickly. I understand if you want an easy way to jam with a buddy but whats the fun in that?

I dont really know if this is what you are asking, and it might be pretty lame sounding with my very limited musical knowledge, but i will take a crack at it anyways. If you play like Am F C G on an uncapoed guitar and Em C G D with a capo on the 5th fret, it gets a pretty nice full sound. They are actually just the same chords at different locations on the fret board. Guster does this type of thing a lot and i really like it. I hope that this helps someone.....
