i don't understand why mine is always so much slower than everyone else... Could it have to do with the fact that I am at school on my university's network?

Yes certain school networks limits certain things , and it appears that alot of school network users have been having slower download speeds on Bit Torrent , not really anything you can do about it , except maybe take the network admin hostage , but i won't recommend that
