Telecaster or Strat?

Post by Rodey »

Can someone explain the difference to me? I want to buy one of the two, but I'm really not sure which to get and I don't know much about them in terms of differences, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the body styles are different, pickups are different, sound is different. Basically, I would go to a music store and try them both out, side by side. That way you'll know much better which you prefer. Personally, I like Strats. Tele's are too "twangy" for me. Here's a website I came across on this:

You cant go wrong with a Strat. Think of all the people who have used them: Jimi, SRV, Clapton, Mayer, etc.

But its all personal preference. I personally have a strat and love the body of it and how it feels. I just need to get good at it. :x

Yeah I have a american strat as well and it is awesome, especially now with my cry baby wah, and boss turbo 2 distortion pedal. Its subjective I guess, but I would say that if you like to play blues and rock I would be inclined to go with a stratocaster. But trying both out is crucial, so i would do that before taking anyones advice.

1) What made you decide between those two?
2) If you don't know that much about either I suggest going to a store and really spending some time playing them before you make up your mind

3) I would get a strat (American).

They are in my price range (the standard, Mexican ones) and I think they'd fit the style of music I want to play.

I'm looking at playing some Lenny Kravitz, Coldplay, U2 and Oasis with an electric, so those are the genre's I'd probably be covering the most.

I know that Kravitz uses a lot of Gibson's, but he used a Strat for Fly Away and Again in studio I believe. I know Jonny Buckland of Coldplay uses Tele's and I know Edge of U2 uses both, so I really don't know which is a better fit.

I wouldn't worry as much about what your idols are playing. If you have a decent enough guitar you can get it to sound very close to pretty much anything. But everyone else is right devote your time to playing each and getting to know them before you make your decision.

They are both great and versatile. I have a tele and I love it. It does twang, blues and straight up RAWK an roll. I think the sound it puts out is a bit raunchier than the strat. Strats are smooth, Teles are Bar rock.

Of course this is all meaningless unless you get a decent amp.

Yes, I agree with that.. Electric guitars are pretty versitile it terms of sounds and effects.
