Beginner guitar scales

Hi... are there any particular scales that are recommended to start off with? I'm a complete newbie. I'd like to try some that you can play all over the fretboard so i can use them when testing out some guitars for the first time at a store in the next week or so. I've got a cheap guitar that i can practice on in the meantime.

For example, would this scale be OK to start with? http://guitar.about.com/library/weekly/aa082300b.htm

If you're trying out a new guitar make sure to pay attention to the sound at every fret on the thing to make sure you won't get a dead one or some buzzing or something...but I'm sure there's tons of threads here on buying a new guitar you can refer to.

Major, Natural minor, major pentatonic and minor pentatonic would be the best scales to learn for a beginner. If you ever need any help shoot me a PM and I'll try to give you some advice. Good luck!

The blues scales is a minor pentatonic scales with an added b5 scale degree.

I would say start with one of the pentatonic scales since they only involve 5 notes. Make sure that when your memorizing and practicing the scale you think about the notes your fretting, it will help you get acquainted with the fret board.

Once i've learned a scale (i'm currently learning the Blues scale i linked to above) can you then experiment with making licks using any of the notes (and combination of notes) in that scale in any order? Is that how it works?
