newbie question..

forgive me, i know everyones gonna hate me for asking. but does the term "false harmonics" refer to the harmonics that arent 5 7 and 12? and if so.. do you always have to change the plucking hands position? say for instance, to get the harmonic over the 3rd fret on the g string.. where should i be plucking the string? ive been doing it near the rear pickup, because thats where i see wooten doing it... and i have no formal teacher, so i kinda mimic what i see, except when i try those harmonics they sound like testiclites being kicked.

false harmonics are when you press down on a string and then hit a harmonic. it changes the pitch of the harmonic because you're changing the vibration length. and it never matters where you're hitting the string for a harmonic, unless you're using your thumb on the plucking hand to touch the string for the harmonic.

If you want to do it the way Jaco does it, assuming you're right handed, the left hand becomes the nut/open string, your right thumb becomes the fret, and then you pick behind your thumb with your fingers. It's just a matter of dividing the string in the right places.

thank you. those videos helped alot. i was confusing terms.. i was just having trouble getting harmonics out of the 3rd frets, but im experimenting with hand positions still. id like to be able to do a nice bass solo at my brothers wedding, but im not sure that will be possible. i have about 6 months.
