Ok so its late at night .. trying to keep the guitar playing low .. and I start doing these speed excercises, 1-2-3-4 on all strings, then up one fret, etc etc... and then I come to the realization that my pinky is out of control!! I do 1, then 2, then 3, and by that time my pinky has raised itself a good 2 to 3 inches from the fretboard, as if it was anticipating that I would put it down on the 4th note ... its kind of hard to explain, but really annoying at the same time. Does this simply mean that my fingers arent completely independent of one another or have I inadvertently trained my pinky to self raise itself like that while I'm playing those excercises??? ANY HELP ??? AHHHH
Does this happen to anyone else?? Please tell me ...

i've been analyzin this problem, and i think its because the pinky is inherently dependent on the ring finger, so thats why mine swings up like that .... damnit... its gonna be a bitch to train myself to brreak this damn habit

i thought that the pinky and ring finger are dependent to a small degree, and this has nothing to do with habit. you can train them to be less dependent but it was my understanding that the muscles that control some movements are connected to both fingers and will move both. no way around that.
SWEET! finally a valid response that doesnt conssit of mispelled jargon
thanks man i will do those exercises and it will hopefully will help

the ring anchor and pinky hammer on. try doing a hammer on with your ring finger as the anchor.
i also found that forcing myself to use the pinky where i normally would use the ring finger helps tremendously
