This Years Sets...

Thought id make a thread as there seems to be quite a lot of discussion in the latest show thread.

I think most would agree that this years sets have been pretty piss poor.

Now let me be the first to say, after seeing the band in London i really wasnt that bothered about the set. It was the first time i had seen the band and it wa amazing. I had a great time and loved every second.

But after looking at some of last years sets, you just wonder why the band are playing such crappy sets. I mean what, was there 5 stand up songs in last nights? Including friggin "Stand Up (For It)"!!!!!! Or whatever it bloody called. And year after year, you see them pull out amazing sets at certain venues too?

Whats going on? Anything to do with the record company as has been suggested? Do the not realise the fans arent keen? Or is there a whole new blood of fans that do actually like these tunes? Do the band themselves like these songs?

We know its Dave, Carter and Stefan who choose the sets, do all 3 like them or is someone dominating? Im just playing Devils Advocate here. Just wondered you thoughts?

I thought the Red Rocks Stand Up wasn't that bad.

Maybe they're just tired of playing Rhyme & Reason for the 80 Million Billionth time? I honestly don't know.

I do know that Central Park was way better than the gig they did in Virginia in 2005.

But like any human being, be it pro athletes or anyone else, in certain occasions people rise to the moment and I think Central Park is a much bigger deal than a normal summer tour stop.

I don't know what to think. Camden n2, Deer Creek n2, and Hartford n2 all had great sets. Even Star Lake, Nissan, and SPAC had solid sets , albiet pretty damn similar ones.

Sometimes I think us "hardcore" fans are in the minority anymore in terms of what people want to see at concerts. At Star Lake, on my walk to the pisser during what would of been my 6th Bayou in a row, I overheard a brah say "Dude, this is one of their best live songs." In 05, after my good friend Sam saw his first DMB show, a show where they opened with 41, played granny and liog, and closed the whole thing with warehouse, told me, "I think Hunger was my favorite of the night. They ripped that song up." or something along those lines.

On the other hand, my neighbor Matt, whose really into music and saw 3 shows with me in 03-04, hated stand up and has only seen them once since its release (cuyahoga 06). We both left that show pretty disappointed, and after reviewing the setlists this tour decided not to make the trip back to 07 (thank heavens).

So, again, I don't know what to think.

There certainly are a lot of diehards but the only big venue concert I've seen DMB at was full of fuckwit college students running around being complete drunk jackasses and having security chase them everywhere (and this is in the Pavilion at Nissan).

Now that LiveNation has basically taken the sandpaper condom of TicketMaster and added broken glass to it, I'm not sure when I'm going to see DMB in concert again.

Really sad but it's just not worth it.

I completely agree. LiveNation released "premium seats" for Star Lake about a month before the show. These seats were off to the side in the tail end of the pavilion, and went for about $240 dollars a pop. What BS.

Here near the rushing rapids of Cuyahoga Falls, the crowd toughed it out through the rains. DMB didn't falter, playing a strong set worthy of the audience's stamina. Early in the evening, Dave instructed the audience to cuddle up in order to combat the cold, but they failed to abide. We could see the ripples of heads bobbing and arms waving to the top of the soaked hill. Every night the sets are evolving...both in song arrangements and in the variations between old and new. We heard Stand Up for the first time in a while, LeRoi and Carter's popping solos putting smiles on our faces. The return of Dylan's All Along The Watchtower as a show closer has proven immensely powerful and reminiscent of the band's early days. We're working our way into another day off. It's now our turn to get wet, pushing cases and loading trucks in the rain. We'll see y'all at Riverbend on Wednesday.

Where do they get that this set is "strong"?

Compared to more recent shows (post-2004) I wouldn't say the sets this year have been "piss poor." Last night's show was the first SU dominated set this year, I believe. I guess it's all relative, but I see the sets this year as being pretty solid, for the most part. Sure, the band plays songs that suck, but they also play ridiculous versions of songs that more than make up for it. But I don't really know what to think either. I'm just as confused as the next person. It still seems bizarre to me that a song like Hunger or Stand Up can be followed by a song like Graves or Seek Up. If you can't see the difference in quality of songwriting/performance there then there is something very wrong.
