What horrid strings!!

Post by PlayLikeDave »

Three weeks ago I put on a set of Dean Markley's that a friend gave to me. I got them from him 2 months ago, and I duno how long he had them before me. They sounded horrible at first (way to brite and lots of buzz). I thought they might have just needed to be broken in. Not the case. Now as I was playing Pay For What You Get, I looked at my fingers, and they were a black color like I was playing with a leaky pen.

what is that about!? anyone have any idea? should I just change my strings? Help me please!

thanks &
peace
I love you oh so well, like a kid loves candy and fresh snow.

He (Ranting Thespian) busts a nut over dean markley strings.

And if the strings were new, it was probably your fretboard that was dirty...cause I've never heard of strings getting that bad.

i've had the same problem on 2 seperate occasions with the dean markley's back in the day when i was first starting to play. i assumed it was just what happens when you play guitar. that's why i always have such a problem with ranting shooting off like they are the greatest thing in the world/ cuz my experience has shown them to be the worst strings.

go with the d'addarios and if you still have a problem with string tarnish, get the coated d'ads or elixirs.

I've never had a problem with them before. They are my favorite string. The best is the Alchemy Brand. I've never heard a better sound from any string. And I've tried them all. But once again, its all relative to what you think a "good" sound is

Ok, my fingers don't get black on the strings unless I have had them on for 3 months and just havn't gone around to replacing them (and I play all the time, so I wear them out in a month to a month and a half). They have never been too bright for me, which is why I like them. They have more focus on a full sound than a bright sound. I have never had buzzing problems, or anything. I'll just give up on Dean Markleys with you guys.

oh ranting! to hear(read) you say(write) that saddens me. i had no idea how much i liked hearing you push for your favorite strings. as a die-hard fan you can't just give up.

i think it has more to do with body chemistry. my fingers just eat up uncoated strings like fat kids eat cookies and milk. it ain't pretty. i say for those of you with the luxury of not eating away at strings and having black fingers (unless of course they are black cuz that's how God made them) try out the brands, but when i hear someone is having this problem, first try the d'ads, cuz i've had better luck with those, then if all else fails you gotta get coated. i like the coated for many reasons but i think for some of us they are a must.

Come on Ranting...Just send all of us at the boards a new set of Markleys and we will see....jk. I am not trying to say Markleys are bad, just that this set is. They might be a year old or more. I duno. I was just wondering why the heck my fingers are turning black. That is disturbing.

Ok. I play the D'adds(custom light) and i love them. But i find that if i jam out particularly long, say 1.5hrs or more then i will get blackened fingers(and i'm white). It never really bothered me, i just figured that that's what happens when you play for a long time. So is my fretboard dirty? What to do.......Grock?

that shouldn't happen. i've at least had a few sets of d'adds that didn't do that but it is hit or miss. with the coated strings (both elixir and d'adds) i've never had problems and never got black fingers.

just for reference, you all should be cleaning the guitar every third time you change the strings. (or there about) i try to clean my whole guitar once every month or 2, sometimes even more often.
