Yeah, there truly is nothing like a Martin for solo or intimate playing. The Taylors are just too bright to stand to listen too for too long. I took my Martin up to a Taylor road show up here in Santa Rosa and played their top of the line one-off custom and there was no comparison.

But if you're trying to cut through a 140db wall of sound, the Taylor is the machete you'd want to have in your hand. I also found that the Taylor was "easier" to play, much more forgiving than my Martin. But the extra work is worth it because the sound is so much richer when you master the Martin.

That and $2.50 will get you a latte at Starbucks.

If you're trying to cut through a 140 db wall of sound, you probably ought to get a jet engine. Anything over 130 immediately causes serious hearing damage.

Dave's tone does not suck.

And an acoustic guitar, no matter how sweet it sounds out of the case is irrelevant.

Good electronics, pickups, preamps etc. make the tone in a live setting and not the guitar itself unless you are using a blend system/mic which Dave does not use.

his tone really isn't that bad. LIsten to Stay, Lie in our Graves, and One Sweet world. Those are all songs that open with Dave and the guitar. The guitar sounds amazing. It has nothing to do with the guitar, its the equipment. With the equipment you can change the tone. You can add bass, treble, middle and all other types of things. Sure certain guitars have certain tones. But Taylors aren't made just to cut thru a bands sound. I do like martins a lot but they seem to big sometimes. I like a small cut-away acoustic, because its easy to handle.

everyone missed the fucking point. a transducer is a transducer. it could be on a martin, a taylor, a walmart yamaha. you can make any case for any guitar but it comes down to the sound scheme that compliments it. You can't make generalizations. My 810ce sounds like a piece of crap on an amp. On dual bose stacks w/ the ES, it is hands down the warmest most authentic sounding electrified guitar ive heard. More so than my blended DCE-Trey. better than my friends OM-28, and we both have a serious Martin bias. on a different system, who knows?

and in general, if you like dave's live tone, with the band, you may very well be tone deaf or perhaps have never heard a high end guitar in person. there is no comparison. You should never be satisfied, much less happy with the sound of an amplified high end guitar against what it would sound like acoustically
