play by ear

and would like to know if there is a program or software that i can hook up to my electric or acoustic to show me what i am playing (that is either write out the notes or tell me the chords that i play)

you don't know the notes you're playing?

The only way you'd be able to do that is if you had a guitar with midi capabilities. You'd be able to run it through some sort of USB interface and into a program which could record midi.

I suggest that you just learn notes/chords. You won't regret it.

There is a really cool website I use all the time that has chord/scale diagrams and is extremely helpful for figuring chord/scale names and positions

Another cool program I've come across recently is Fretboard Warrior. It's a free program that will test your knowledge of the fretboard and will help you improve it. You can google er up.
