Age had nothing to do with anything. Joining a band has nothing to do with it. SRV vs. DMBtabs? Because of a disagreeing opinion. Because i like Daves newest album and hope that this one is just as good. I respect his album and his music. You say the lyrics disapoint. Thats you critiquing a pro. Anything Dave writes is a lot better then i could do. So i look at it in a realistic point of view. Hes better than i ever will be. And anything he writes will be better then anything i will ever write. Instead of trying to pull myself up to him just to push him down. I admire him because he is better. How many crowds of 10,000 have i played for? None. We all know dave has played a million of those shows. So i guess i just have respect for any other musicans that are better. That makes me a loser how?

"This dude fuckin' kills me. Honestly. He says the lyrics never disappoint. I post disappointing lyrics. He says sometimes the lyrics disappoint."

ahhh good job. You misread my post. I said lyrics aren't always amazing. Refering to other types of music like the blues. "I'm a blues man...I'm a blues man...and I'm here to stay"- Johnny Winter (Blues guitarist) Thats simple lyrics. But they work well for that genre. I would say Daves lyrics for steady as we go are awesome lyrics compared to other musicians out there today. Other musicians in his genre don't write lyircs as well as him For the most part. Like Jack Johnson his lyrics aren't really that sophisticated but hes a great musician. Instead of comparing Dave lyrics to Dave lyrics try to look at the bigger picture.

"It is just as bad lyrically as Smooth Rider, and the fact that Dave wrote it in about 5 minutes shines through."

Did he really write it in 5 minutes. What you said makes no sense. One- if you can write a song of that magnitude in 5 minutes your an amazing writer. Two- How do you know he wrote it in 5 minutes? If you can show me he did. I'll believe it. And i'll say "Good job on your dave facts"

So i NEVER EVER put anyone down thats better then me. I guess i speak for myself on that matter. So enjoy being high and mighty on the DMBtabs board.

Cheers,
Jack

Also sorry i forgot to put my age in their. I'm 16 and i have been playing for 2 years. Been in and out of bands for a year and a half. I sit in with a lot of bands. Mostly classic rock band. I'm a lead and rythmm guitarist and a singer.

Is that what you wanted to know?

There's obviously no getting through to you, so let's just note that I am comparing apples to apples. Dave Matthews's songs to Dave Matthews's songs. Not Dave Matthews's songs to the Blues to Jack Johnson. That's apples to tires to blimps.

Alright dude, I have no interest whatsoever in arguing with you over what was clearly a generalization, not only for Smooth Rider, but the whole album. Dave crapped out all of the lyrics to the songs for Stand Up in the studio, with the exception of maybe Hello Again. It was hyperbole, and Smooth Rider is still shitty no matter how much you defend it

No getting to me? Its my opinion buddy. You don't "get to me" All you say is that dave sucked at the lyrics. You don't really compare anything. You put up smooth rider. Which is in a genre where lyrics are simple....but good. I'm saying hes not....and trying to prove it. Dave crapped out? I can't write lyrics that good....so i don't think so...you can think what you want....Don't call me dumb because i have an opinion.....You really didn't presuade me with anything......just said "dave sucked"

That is a false statement if i have ever heard one. We all have different opinions, we just tend to lean towards the fact that stand up was not that good. i have already told you, i am a huge dave matthews fan, i love his music. what we are trying to say is, he has written so much better stuff and the stand up lyrics cannot even compete with thos from BTCS, Crash and UTTAD.

I'll agree with Alpine on this one really. I agree with everyone that Dave is indeed a pretty decent lyric writer, but Stand Up was definitely not his shining moment, that is for sure. I'm not trying to say I can write lyrics better than Dave at this point in my life, but I know he can write better lyrics.

And just on a side note to SRVDMB's original long post before. I don't really think its good to just immediately tell yourself you won't even be able to write as good as Dave does. First off, the magnitude and overall greatness of lyrics is opinion as well, so maybe someone already thinks you are better than Dave. Also, as a fan, you should make it a striving goal to be better than those you idolize. Take what they can teach, and build on it.

I'm done now.

He's right. If you cannot possibly fathom penning lyrics equivalent to those, you:

A. have serious self-esteem issues
B. have an absurd man-crush on Dave Matthews
C. are certifiably insane
D. shouldn't post outrageous statements
E. all of the above
