F? Isn't it that the first note played and therefore the key of the song (although that doesn't always apply).

eh, it can be, but don't ever rely on that. a song can start on any scale tone and be in a key other than that tone.

in my experience, the first note usually tells what the mode is. So if the song is in C and it starts with F, good chance it's going to be in C Lydian

chah, but you wouldn't say it's in the key of F. a song can start on D and still be in C, or whatever. ya'know?
