The last stop scale

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

The last stop scale

Post by mattsox94 »

Hey guys.
My band is doing a cover of the last stop and I need to play fills over the verse. What scale should I use? It sounds like a D Arabian scale but it isn't...

Cheers!

Found a couple of quotes doing a search, this may help.
The Last Stop is based around F# Phrygian Dominant (same notes as B Harmonic minor with F# being the tonal center)
and this one...

My friend who is a freakin maniac with music theory said most Middle Eastern type music is either Melodic or Harmonic Minors, but to me an F# Melodic or Harmonic minor doesn't fit. Any help? Thanks

well, its really not in F#, thats just the key its closest too. i'm assuming you are asking this so that you can solo over it, and im gonna go ahead and tell you that you might as well forget about that idea.
I wasn't looking to solo over it. I would like to try to compose something with a similar flavor, and I would have to know the type of scale I think. It was extra funktacular whatever Dave was thinkin (or smoking) when he wrote it. I like the type of music for guitar. Thanks Fatjack for the response

its a great style no doubt, but a very tough one to master. me telling you all the scales would do you no good, because its just a mixture of a few. if you want to compose something similar, then do what im sure dave did: play until you hear something you like. your friend was right though, melodic and harmonic minor is a good place to start
