The thing about tripping billies is that it takes a certain amount of experience in strumming and picking in order to play it successfully. The thing i've learned about tablature is that it gives people false hope that they can play anything they want cause its tablature. Strumming is not something that's taught by word of mouth or internet writtings.
I can't stand when people ask the question: " is it uduududdduududddud."
Strumming is someting that comes with knowledge, practice and more practice. If tripping billies is the only song you want to learn then just keep plugging at it, take everyones's advice about it and keep with the practicing.
I suggest learning simplier songs such as tom petty and jack johnson if you want to learn how to strum.
As far as trippin' billies goes, ths strumming is a rapid strumming between up and down and the key is to learn the song soley by sound before you decide learn the song musically. There's another thread about this song somewhere.
Tablature has taught me a lot about the guitar but not about strumming. Practice is the key to strumming.

honestly, you have to listen to the song a ton of times to get the feel for it. I have been a drummer my whole life so when i picked up guitar, strumming came fairly easy to me. It's all rhythm. listen to billies a ton of times and then play it slow by yourself, when you start to get the feel for it, start playing with the music. Check this out, it might help a little bit. (the verse he shows you how to play is not the one listed here on the site just so you know) but everything else is correct so the part you are asking for is correct. he tells you where to put your fingers, and just watch him strum it. Hope this helps
yea ive been playing dave mostly the past 2 years....mostly concentrated on liog, the stone, most of the easy songs......the past month all i have been doing is billies and ive alrdy listen to it a million times im gettin the strumming down better each day cuz of the practice i put into it. billies is definetly the hardest song ive tried and im not doing to bad at it. my problem has always been strumming. but yea i wasnt asking if its udududududud i could figure that out for myself. sorry for not being more precise but ii wanted ideas on how to go about it but the answer was alwaz practice heh....thanks for your input guys. all we can do is practice

i guess it depends on the person but i found stone to be fairly easy. i still have trouble with the mutin in the stone but for the most part its fairly easy. its one of those songs where u can sit and watch tv and just let ur hands memorize the notes. i used to sit around and watch a 2 hour movie each day while i was just doing the stone
I can play the whole thing no problem, but i just have a hard time with the 2-3-2 part. i can keep up the tempo, it just sounds like shit most of the time

are you referring to the stone??
cause i don't have a problem hitting the strings, i have a problem timing my picking with the fingers at those three notes. i can play the rhythm fine, just the notes aren't always as full as the should be.

I was just saying most people struggle with the stone and specifically that part because of the syncopation.
