Condenser mic for recording guitar

Post by Coldchillin »

I usually hook right into the mixer with a stereo cord through my mixer, but after hearing Miguel's stuff I like the sound gotten by a mic better. It has a more acoustic, natural sound. What one would be good for guitar recording, as well as vocals I suppose, that won't break my bank?

What qualifies as breaking your bank?

I wouldn't really really want to spend over $200 or so on a mic. It depends though. If it'll really sound incredible, then I am for it.

Well it isn't a condensor, but the Shure SM-57 does guitar and vocals very well.
Condensor wise, the AKG Perception 200 is a good, versitle mic in that range.

Are they good for recording acoustic straight other than recording the amp?

I don't own, but have used both. Both would work for vocals, amp micing, and straight acoustic micing.

I own a beta 57A and I'd say that you're not going to get ideal results recording acoustic guitar with a dynamic mic. Wont be bad but it wont be great. Condenser is the way to go.

I have this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=r ... id/273158/

I cant get it to work very well due to they shitty ass sound card in my laptop, which I plan on getting a new one for x-mas. But I have gotten a few solid recordings out of it. Basically if you have any questions about it, feel free to ask.

That looks like an awesome deal. Any chance of a clip of you recording an acoustic, but straight to the mic, not micing the amp? I know you said your sound card is bad, but...? How do you think it sounds with hiss and picking up high and low tones?

Actually because of the sound card problems I left the mic at home when i came to school. I will be going back on thanksgiving break in about two weeks and will be sure to mess around with it. I have a few basic recordings that I have one my computer, but i have yet to convert them and they are only able to be opened in cakewalk. I did a lot of research for a condenser mic in the 100$ price range and that seemed to be the best deal. It picks up everything great. It has to be used in a very quiet room, because it will pick up the sound of a cat meowing 100 yards away. Happy mic hunting :)

I've got an AKG 79 [?], and it records my guitar better than if I plug directly in to my sound card [going through mixer of course].

I paid 100$ for it but it was originally 200$
