well its good to know i was taken seriously. laws schmaws, fines schmines. I mean "techinically" when i sell heroin to little kids, i should get "fined" but come on, laws were meant to be broken!

my sister in law that i live with has a seagul in that body style and never has played it. I need to find a way to ask her if i can F around with it.

wow, so many people voted for martin. i am surprised.

well. lets see, both have completely different sound and tone.

playability is good on both

BUT i just love taylors so much more. Martins sound like any other guitars. I have a tak that sounds just as good as the martin, but taylor on the other hand has the best tone and acousticity.

I believe that martin guitars are how the acoustic guitar is supposed to sound. All other guitars are just trying to copy the martin tone, or do their own thing (like taylor, which I respect, but do not prefer)

You might be pleasantly surprised. Although I've never played one I've heard great things about Seagulls. They do have a fairly wide fretboard compared to most steel strings so that might take some getting used to.

i feel taylors and martins both make great guitars and cant be compared which is better... its all about which tone and feel you like. some people prefer martins and some prefer taylors, just because you like the way the martin feels and sounds doesnt mean its a better guitar than a taylor. when you buy a 2000 plus dollar guitar that is a martin or taylor its going to be great. im in the middle of trying to decide which one i want. its been a few weeks of playing both. i wish i was rich so i could get a 614ce and a hd-28. im kind of leaning towards the 614ce, i just love how it is so bright and the feel of it is great. plus the one at my local dealer, the big leaf maple had a virus. it looks like there are flames on it. it looks like no other one i have seen.

So for those of you that are shopping for both, why? Why are you looking at two guitars that are so damn opposite?

And for the Taylor fans, what models have you found you liked and why?

did anyone else feel like the taylors feel very uncomfortable on your leg? maybe im nuts, but it felt very awkward.

My $500 all solid wood Blueridge BR-160 sounds just as good as any Martin or Taylor I've ever heard. I'm voting Taylor as an overall company, because they don't use micarta for fretboards or bridges on any guitar less than $2000. However, my Blueridge is built exactly like a prewar D-28, and the sound is absolute amazing, so i definitely like the high end Martins as well. Both companies should be ashamed of themselves for how much they charge for their guitars now.

another thing I was told is that Martin hand rubs their finish on all their guitars where as Taylor sprays and cooks all of theirs so they can pump out more gutiars faster. Can this be an important factor? I never really thought anythign of the finish.

The only way I would ever buy a Taylor, is if I was in a serious band that was performing on a regular basis, and I needed something to cut through everything else. Other than that, I have no desire to have one.

I was just checking out DMB's videos on vh1.com and found a live performance of Oh by Dave. I know that he's playing a Martin, but I don't know which. If anyone knows let me know because I'd like to go down to my local guitar shop and try playing one.

Also, I've been a trumpet player for almost 20 years. Guitar is a pretty recent thing for me. With tumpets, guitars, or any other instrument on a professional level I don't know of a single musician that doesn't own several instruments. Reason is that they all have different sounds.

For instance, I have a Schilke X4 which is fantastic for playing lead and latin stuff, but it's TERRIBLE for playing classical. I have a Bach Strad 72/43 for that and it sounds great.

Guitars are the same way. Someone earlier said that Taylors are better at "cutting through teh band" while Martin's are better at "sitting around the camp fire." I think this is a pretty good answer. Both has it's unique qualities which sound better in certain circumstances.

That being said...there's always personal taste. Even though I'm a "camp fire" guitarist I just personally liked the feel and tone of the 310ce better than the similarly priced Martin at the shop.

Now, when we start talking up in the price range with the HD-28 and 600 series and such I don't know because I haven't played them. This thread has inspired me to go try a few out though to see what I think about them.
