not that it matters for pop music singing all that much, but in more professional singing, you always want to keep your mouth as vertical as possible while still singing the right vowel. it's more complicated than this, with the handling of dipthongs and stuff, but basically, the vertical mouth ("ah" sound) is what you want instead of the "ee" sound that you get when you smile. it's just a tone technique that makes your voice sound better. it doesn't mean you don't sing E's, you just do them differently.

but really, if you're singing dave matthews it doesn't matter. i've never heard the man toss "locus iste" into the two step intro......
