I'm sure Lillywhite has to be aware, at least to some degree, how his albums have fared against the rest of the band's catalog.

WWYS came on the radio today and it had that great riff at the beginning. I feel like Dave has gotten away from the distinct riffs (SMTS, Billies, Ants). The music just isn't as fun anymore.

The key is, and always has been, to let/make the band follow Dave's lead. I think Dave is a humble dude and in (literally) a million other cases some band manager would have already convinced him that he is the talent and that he'd be better off on his own.
