sure they jam on certain songs, but not nearly as much as a jam band. Plus that #41 was only about 34 mins of actual playing. The whole track length is 38 mins and thats with all of the crowd noise. And thats cuz they had Bela Fleck and the Flecktones with em on stage, DMB would never play #41 that long by themselves.

The only question is whether or not the last "jam" is going to be 1 minute or 10. Jambands constantly change the very structure of their songs. They'll drift into different keys, transforming the song into something totally unrecognizeable from what they started with.
Now, I love DMB as much as the next guy. But theyre not a jamband.

Yes, because it seems very contradictory to me. I think all pop music basically sounds the same. I would agree with the statement that pop is mainstream, and DMB is not mainstream. So unless anyone can come up with a better genre for them, I'm stickin with jam band. Hey, that's what WMP puts them in when I put their CDs into my computer.

The fourth largest touring act in the world (even when they dont tour anywhere but the US) isnt mainstream? I can sympathize with you not wanting to call it pop, but theyre pretty damn mainstream.
Dmb is just dmb. They dont fit in any other category for me, cause theyre different from just about any other band out there. Nobody sounds like them. You cant tell people who they sound like. You can just tell them what the makeup is of the band, and until they hear it you wont be able to convey it to them. Or at least I cant.

I agree with you mb. However, I don't know how they are mainstream? What I mean is, I have been listening to them for about 9 years; everyone I have met whether it be a co-worker or close friends have not really taking a liking to DMB. I have tried introducing solo shit, D&T shit, and DMB shit, nothing seems to work. Yet, these people tend to say DMB is mainstream. I am not talking about 5 or so people, I am talking about a lot more...50 maybe 60....who knows but it's a lot. The thing is, everybody considers them mainstream and pop, yet the only DMB friends I have are the ones I have met while touring over the last 8 years. They are rarely played on the radio where I live which is right next to detroit. I find this even harder to believe. It seems as though someone who makes 80million plus every tour year would be played non-stop. It's almost like Dave fans are invisible or imaginary. I have tried to figure out why it is like this, maybe it's demographics? Maybe it's the bands opposition to Clear Channel (FUCKING MONOPOLIZING WHORES)? Anyhow, I'm tired and have to get some sleep....or at least try.
Just because they're one of the top touring bands doesn't mean that they are mainstream. I listen to the radio a lot, and I have heard probably 5 DMB songs (at the most) on the radio, including hearing the same song at least twice. I consider mainstream when you can walk up to any average joe shmoe and ask him to finish a lyric, like in a Brittney Spears song for example. If you went up to some random guy on the street and said "finish this: Gravedigger, when you dig my grave..." I bet they couldn't do it. And he even won a Grammy for that, too.

I agree with you on one aspect, but in a sense I don't. I think finishing a lyric to a Britney song or Justin Timberlake or Blink 182 would be considered more of a "pop" characteristic than "mainstream". I think "pop" pertains more to radio play, where as, "maintstream" pertains more to the overall popularity of the music without just including top 40 shit..
When I say mainstream I mean solely by definition. I don't think Britney would be considered mainstream by definition....but DMB would. Eh, I dunno...I'm not making any sense here..

I think 'pop band' has a bad connotation nowadays because of what is popular, not the actual definition of the word. The Beatles made 'pop' music, and it's arguably some of the best out there to this day. We gotta remember that pop mostly sucks now, but it's not required to be crap to be pop music.
