Tender, I disagree with your riff one, or we're listening to different versions. I have for the Live Art version intro:
* = let ring
-----------------------------------
------------------------------------
----------------------------5-------
---5*------3*------5*--------------

ive got live art too.....
im gettin just A C D and then the non-ringing note is D but lowered an octave...
so on the D String ----7*-----10*------12*------
then a 10 on the E string for the lower D

try playing mine, i thought it sounded perfect, but who knows
i think its a combination of the two. i think it definately goes up from the opening A, and i think it goes to a C, not a G...but then, on the third ringing note, i think it goes up and down, as tender suggested he plays two notes, one lower and one higher, similar to the stomping grounds stuff.
so i think it would go A C G/D but if you just play along with it, A C D sounds fine while ACG sounds a little different. i think A C D in more with the banjo while A C G is more of his own thing, but essentially both work.
the part i really struggled with tho was the verse part...ive gotten a little thanks to tender but i still dont see his C#s in there (6 on G string)

Well, Im pretty positive that those are C#'s. And if they arent, would someone like to tell me what note he is playing in between the A's. The C# is a dead note but its still there and you can hear it, or atleast I can...
